Dr. J
Dr. Jae Kim is a board certified orthodontist that has been practicing in NYC his whole career.
Dr. J comes from a family of dentists, but he had an unique career path to dentistry. After he graduated from University of Toronto with a bachelor in biomedical engineering, he worked as an engineer for 2 years before realizing that he wanted to follow the family footsteps.
Dr. J moved to NYC to attend NYU School of Dentistry. He was in the top 1% throughout 4 years of dental school and was inducted into the Omicron Kappa Upsilon (OKU) Dental Honor Society. During dental school, he explored all fields of dentistry but orthodontics mesmerized him as its principles align with his engineering background.
Dr. J attended University of Southern California (USC) in Los Angeles to receive his Masters of Science and Certificate in dentofacial orthopedics and orthodontics. Upon completing his residency, he spent countless hours in being board certified. He is still an active member of American Board of Orthodontics (ABO) as well as many dental associations and study clubs. He dedicates most of his time studying and attending seminars when he is not seeing patients in the office.
He is up-to-date with the latest technologies and conservative treatment methods.
Dr. Yoomi Heo
Dr. Yoomi Heo is a child advocate who commits herself to deliver excellent dentistry for all infants, toddlers, children, and young adults, including those with special healthcare needs. As your trusted pediatric dentist, she truly cares about your child and takes the time to get to know every youngster she treats. This personal relationship allows her to tailor her care to your child and ensure that every dental visit is comfortable and enjoyable.
Dr. Heo earned her Doctorate in Dental Surgery at New York University with highest honors. Her love and care for children led her to pursue a specialist degree in Pediatric Dentistry at New York University, where she received extensive training in all phases of dentistry for children and adolescents.
In her free time, she enjoys spending time with her husband and baby girl. Dr. Heo believes in treating every child as she would want others to treat her own. She is grateful to be given the opportunity to play a small part but important part in each child’s life.
Dr. Sung Kim
Dr. Kim had his undergraduate degree in Life Sciences
at Queen's University in Canada. He then received
Doctor of Dental Surgery degree from NYU College of
Dentistry.
Dr. Kim values life-long relationship with patients and
thrives to meet their needs and expectations. He
considers the appreciation and acknowledgment from
patients for the quality of work they receive one of the
most rewarding aspects of his job.
Dr. Kim is a Fellow of International Dental Implant
Association and active member of American
Academy of Aesthetics and Academy of General
Dentistry.
When he is away from the office, Dr. Kim enjoys doing
house chores as well as skiing and travelling with his
wife and two kids.
Dr. Afshan Haque
Dr. Afshan Haque is a general dentist and the practice owner of
Avicenna Dental Care in West Harlem, New York. She is a Stuyvesant
High School Alumna. She graduated from NYU College of Dentistry
and completed her training at the VA hospitals in Brooklyn and the
Bronx. Always learning, Dr. Haque attended the prestigious Pankey
Institute and Columbia University’s renowned Implant Continuum.
Passionate about dentistry, Dr. Haque has volunteered her
dental skills in areas of need such as rural Tennessee, Central America,
and Asia. She has worked for non-profit organizations such as Medico,
SOS Children Villages, CDRS, and RAM. She feels that her volunteer
work has been one of the most rewarding aspects of her dental
career.
Dr. Haque understands what it feels like to be a patient and goes
out of her way to make each patient comfortable during their visit.
She is known for her gentle touch. She says “I love what I do! I enjoy
helping my patients. I’m lucky to have the best team in the world.
They make it a pleasure to come to work every day.”
A native New Yorker, Dr. Haque never gets tired of exploring her
hometown. On weekends, Dr. Haque unwinds with a good book and spends time with friends and family.
Dr. Joana Compere
Dr. Joana Compere is the newest associate general dentist at Avicenna
Dental Care. An Ivy League graduate, Dr. Compere received her DDS
degree from the Columbia University College of Dentistry. She
completed her training with the AEGD program at NYU College of
Dentistry.
Dr. Compere feels right at home with the staff and her patients.
Known for her compassion, you can always find Dr. Compere with a
smile on her face. She’s great at getting even the most nervous
patients to laugh. She says “What’s gets me excited about dentistry is
creating something out of nothing. Taking the worst problems like a
broken tooth and fixing it.”
Originally from New Jersey, Dr. Compere considers herself an
honorary New Yorker. When she’s not brightening her patient’s day,
you can find her at a new brunch spot or watching The Office on
Netflix.

Our assistants Paola and Lillibeth are compassionate, smart and experienced. They are passionate about dentistry. They are here to make your dental visit comfortable and as stress-free as possible.
Angelica Hernandez
Our front desk receptionist, Angelica, is from the beautiful Dominican Republic. But she truly loves her new city, New York, and calls it home. With a strong background in customer service, she is here to make sure your visit is seamless and that you are comfortable. Always smiling, she's the face of our office and the funnest member of our team. In her free time, she loves to eat out with family and friends.
Sabrina Akbari
Our receptionist, Sabrina, is a people person. She loves interacting with our patients to make sure their needs are being met. She says "Oral health means a lot to me. I feel pleased to see patients look and feel better. I do my best to make sure patients have their appointments to have their dental work done". Sabrina is here to answer any insurance questions you may have. Her long term goal is to be a Registered Nurse.
